Cubamistad statement in solidarity with Cuba’s sovereignty

Cuba has been subject to a blockade lasting nearly 65 years. Enforcement has ebbed & flowed depending on which U.S. president is in power. In his first term, Trump instituted the State Sponsor of Terrorism (SSOT) designation, an illegal unilateral sanction. The SSOT continued under Biden and is still in place. It has imposed all too familiar suffering on the Cuban populace.

On January 3rd, the US military kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and killed 82 Cubans in the process. This has resulted in an end to oil shipments from Venezuela to Cuba. Trump’s seizure of oil tankers from countries that support the Cuban people has curtailed other oil sources.

Threats to invade Cuba have recently surfaced and must be deterred. Cuba is not a threat to the US; it has never attacked any nation and identifies as a member of the Caribbean Zone of Peace.

The US has also taken strong measures to curtail Cuba’s international healthcare outreach. Cuba has advanced treatments for diabetes, Alzheimer’s & lung cancer.

Cubamistad is demanding an end to the economic attacks on Cuba by taking the following actions.

  • Remove Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list
  • End the blockade
  • End the occupation of Guantánamo
  • Respect Cuba’s sovereignty.

Cuba’s greatest wealth lies in it’s people who will survive by resisting as they have over the previous decades.
